What To Do When It’s Freezing Outside

The last few weeks following Edina’s Winter Break have placed Minnesota as a close winner in lowest temperature of the year, overtaking the usual victors, Antarctica and Alaska. So with these wacky temperatures floating in, finding some joy in the day can be difficult. While some lose sleep over fear of frostbite, here are some simple activities that can make the cold seem slightly less icy:

Throw boiling water in the air like you just don’t care: Heat a pot of water to boiling, drag it outside, and throw it up like it’s the last thing you’re ever going to do. Your total time outside will be less than thirty seconds, and the effect is definitely worth it!

Blow bubbles outside: Heat up some leftover bubble solution until it is slightly warm, then head outside and blow several bubbles. Try to catch a good-sized one on the wand and watch as it quickly freezes into a ball of ice.

Break an old t-shirt: Looking to release some pent-up anger? Dip an old T-shirt in boiling water and bring it outside to freeze. Once solid, bash it as hard as you can against a wall and it should shatter into pieces.

What's your favorite wintertime activity? (That starts with an 'S'.)

Go skiing: Yes, even in -20 degree weather, cross-country skiing can be fun! Pick a day with slow to no winds, throw on a couple extra layers, and listen to the quiet crunch of the snow as you ski through the forest. With barely anyone outside, it’s the perfect way to enjoy nature in peace while getting some exercise.

Take a warm bath: Sometimes, the number on the thermometer is just too low for any level of activity outside. Instead, create a relaxing evening to boost your feelings. Make yourself a steaming bath (don’t forget the bubbles), sit by the fireplace, or cook yourself a cup of hot cocoa.
