All I can say about Current Jam 2014 is wow, I live in one talented community. Also, please teach me how to sing like that. And dance like that. And play instruments like that.

I attended the Friday night showing, and although the temperature in Fick was about twenty degrees colder than I would’ve liked, the phenomenal performances made the chill bearable.

Energetic numbers including “Hey Ya!” and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” got everyone dancing in their seats, and helped to heat up the place.

Additionally, songs such as “Juliet”, “Spice Up Your Life”, “Upside Down”, and “S.O.S.” provided a welcome throwback to the good-old elementary school days, while recent hits like “What Does the Fox Say?” and “Happy” kept the show as “current” as the title proclaims.

Although the group performances are fun to watch (and look like a lot of fun to perform), I prefer the solos, as they showcase individual talent, and let a person’s voice truly shine.

It was entertaining to see the soloists make the songs their own. Namely, the transformation of Ben Folds’ “Brick” into a duet between Tori Adams and Matt Dahl, Erin Donnelly and Lucy Erickson’s adorable ad-libbing in the spoken portion “Home”, and Tori Adams, Hayley Lewis, and Soph Wright’s skillful and creative interpretation of “Royals.”

Some my favorite solos included “Flight” sung by Tori Adams and Shelby Rosen, “Say Goodbye” sung by Harry deGrood, and “Royals” sung by Tori Adams, Hayley Lewis, and Soph Wright, but it truly is subjective because everyone was incredible.

All in all, I would like to congratulate all Concert Choir members on an amazing performance. I’m sure a lot of hard work went on behind the scenes to make it look effortless, and you should be proud of the hours you put in.

Also, shout out to the band, which was comprised of talented Edina High School musicians who played their hearts out. It is really cool to see fellow classmates, especially those who you may not even know are musical, go up on stage and give it their all.

To the seniors – good luck in whatever endeavors lie ahead for you and I hope you keep singing, even if it is just in the shower or the car. To everyone else – I can’t wait to see you do it all over again next year.
