Henry Jarvinen is a senior at Edina High School.

Edina High School senior Henry Jarvinen has been skiing on the Edina Nordic Ski team since seventh grade. Since joining the team, Jarvinen has achieved great success as a skier. He recently spoke to Zephyrus about his sport.

Zephyrus: What is your favorite thing about skiing?

Henry Jarvinen: My favorite part about skiing is the difficulty. It’s one of the most challenging sports in the world, and therefore one of the most rewarding.

Zephyrus: What is the biggest success you’ve had skiing?

H.J.: My biggest accomplishments have been third at US Biathlon nationals, fourth at Summer North American Biathlon Nationals (US and Canada), and fifth at the Mesabi East Invitational.

Zephyrus: Do you enjoy being on the team?

H.J.: I love being on the team. Without my teammates, traveling and training would be very uneventful. Without a good team, it is very hard to stay motivated.

Zephyrus: Who is someone you look up to on your team, or a famous skier?

H.J.: My favorite skier is Petter Northug Jr. (Norway) because he has been extremely successful over his career, and even though he had a pretty crappy season last year, he has made a comeback this year, and it has been really fun to watch.

Zephyrus: Any plans/things you hope to achieve by the rest of the year?

H.J.: My goal for the rest of this season is to qualify for Junior Nationals in Truckee, California, and finish in the top ten at the state meet.

Zephyrus: What are your plans for college? After college? Do you plan to keep skiing throughout collage?

H.J.: Next year I hope to go to college in New England where I have been talking to several college ski coaches about skiing for them next year. Right now my top choice is St. Lawrence University in New York.
