At the end of this May, Edina High School sophomores and juniors (seniors are not invited, unfortunately) will be given the opportunity to try different classes, also known as May Term. However, sophomores and juniors that have been taking foreign languages are allowed to participate in cultural experiences to other countries. The three pilot trips offered this year are a trip to Rome for Latin students, Costa Rica for Spanish students, and Canada for French students.

“Students will have lots of experience with history, architecture, art history and language,” said EHS Latin teacher Ms. Drew.

In order to qualify for the pilot trips, students must be in at least the third level of the class, they must have higher than a C average, and they may not have any broken attendance contracts.

Although these experiences are educational, and take the place of class participation, the trips come at a rather high cost. “It is a big commitment for you and your family. If you have the means, and are able to put together the funding to be able to go, I think these experiences are valuable. I think having an expert with you, your teachers who know the language and know a lot of the culture, having them with you when you have these experiences, you are going to be able to take so much more than just leaning behind a desk or having a vacation,” said Melanie Pusateri, the teacher organizing the pilots.

So EHS students, while planning your May Term, consider your options.
